Tandon Naresh

Areas of Interest:

Vibration and Acoustic Emission Monitoring, and Noise Engineering.

About the Faculty:

Professor Naresh Tandon obtained his B.Tech. (Mechanical Engg.) degree from Institute of Technology, BHU (1976) and PhD from IIT Delhi in 1991, specialising in noise & vibrations. He joined IIT Delhi in 1977 and became Professor in 2005. He was elevated to Professor HAG scale in 2015. Prof. Tandon was Head of Industrial Tribology, Machine Dynamics and Maintenance Engineering Centre (ITMMEC) at IIT Delhi from 2005 to 2012. He has more than 40 years of experience of working on research and industrial consultancy projects & teaching in the area of noise engineering and vibration monitoring. Vibration and noise monitoring of bearings and gears are of special interest. Recently, he is also involved in research in the area of Tribo-dynamics. Eight students have completed their PhD under his guidance. He has published more than 130 research papers in journals and conferences in his field, including 15 in prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) journals. These papers are well cited by researchers in the areas of vibration and noise monitoring with more than 3600 citations. He has also published two books and contributed chapters in two books. One of the chapters published in a book edited by Prof. Robert Gao of Massachusetts university, USA is well cited. Recently published book (2017) “Vibration and Noise Engineering” (jointly with Prof. B.C. Nakra) is a text book for senior undergraduate and post graduate students and is also useful for practicing engineers. Prof. Tandon has completed 10 sponsored research and 85 industrial consultancy projects. Prof. Naresh Tandon received NORAD (Norway) (1980-81) and British Council (1989) Fellowships. He has received training and worked/visited universities and industries in Norway, UK, France, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and Nepal. He was elected a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and The Institution of Engineers in 2014. He is a Life Fellow of Acoustical Society of India (ASI) and Indian Institution of Plant Engineers. Prof. Tandon is also a Life member of Condition Monitoring Society of India. He was awarded Sir C.V. Raman award for best paper (1994) and Prof. S. Bhagavantam award for outstanding contribution and leadership provided in the field of Acoustics (2015) by ASI. Prof. Tandon delivered 15th Dr. S.P. Luthra Memorial Lecture in 2008. He has also served as a member of the National Committee on Noise Pollution Control, Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment & Forests and was involved in the formulation of noise standards for environment, portable and big diesel generator sets, vehicles and firecrackers.
